CARTIER.
Tortue.
No. 71-22-5859-1-1?
Circa 1924.
Ladies' wristwatch in 18K (750 thousandths) gold.
Turtle-shaped case with a family coat-of-arms on the back featuring a deer bearing the family motto "Industrial Permanente" and underneath "DWS-ECS 24.10.24".
Patinated dial with Arabic numerals and baton hour markers, Breguet-style hands, signed "Cartier".
Hand-wound mechanical movement, 15 jewels, signed "European Watch & Clock" and numbered 1713022.
Case size: 22 x 30 mm.
Gross weight: 21.5 g.
(sold as is, with large traces of wear on the case, the case should be completely refurbished, in particular the numbers on the case back, some of which are illegible, the coat of arms, which is difficult to read, and the inscriptions, a very early Cartier model).
Note :
The Cartier Tortue watch, introduced in 1912 by Louis Cartier, is distinguished by its turtle shell-shaped case, a bold innovation at a time when watches were mostly round. This unique design quickly won over customers looking for originality and elegance.
In 1928, Cartier enriched the collection with the Tortue Monopoussoir, a single-pusher chronograph demonstrating the company's technical expertise. Today, this rare model is highly prized by collectors.
In the 1990s, Cartier relaunched the Tortue as part of the Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP), which was produced for a decade. This series featured horological complications such as the perpetual calendar, large date and minute repeater, while retaining the Tortue's iconic design.
In 2024, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Privé Cartier collection, the company presented new versions of the Tortue, including a limited edition in platinum inspired by a unique 1929 model. This re-edition is a testament to Cartier's ability to combine tradition and innovation, paying tribute to its rich heritage while responding to contemporary expectations.
Today, the Cartier Tortue, like our example that has remained in the same family for a century, remains a watchmaking icon, appreciated for its distinctive design and rich history, embodying the elegance and savoir-faire of the House of Cartier.
