AFRICAN FOLK ART. Barber shop sign. Wooden panel painted with three choices of men's hairstyles. Size: 110 x 70 cm. Provenance: Estate of Mr B, Tours. Note "Hairdresser signs are certainly one of the most authentic urban survivals of traditional African art. They describe the 'being' of the contemporary in the same way that masks and hairstyles expressed the ancestral soul. On the fringes of official trends, the panels are a sensitive reflection of socio-cultural change and express the profound aspirations of populations in the throes of change". Literature: "Ici bon coiffeur", hairdresser signs in Africa. LERAT/SEISER.
