Baule Ivory Coast : Hard wood, dark brown patina. Waka Sona (wooden being)" statue representing a "Blolo bian", husband of the afterlife, standing, legs half-bent, face sporting a long beard and sophisticated hairstyle. Height 53 cm. Note: Blolo refers to the parallel world where the ancestors reside, the place of origin and destination of each individual. At birth, every BAOULÉ leaves behind a male spouse - blolo bian - or a female spouse - blolo bla. Thus, certain troubles encountered in life are interpreted as the manifestation of the discontent of the spouses in the afterlife. To appease them, people honour these statuettes on the diviner's advice.
