"Please accept my very warm thanks for your kind message. During these difficult and anxious times through which we have been passing the expressions of sympathy and goodwill which I have received from all quarters have been a source of great strength to me."
Prime Minister since 1937, Chamberlain was the British signatory of the Munich Agreement on 30 September 1938. An indelible mark of Adolf Hitler's diplomatic seizure of power, these agreements paved the way for the expansion of the 3rd Reich, in the face of the incredulity of the French and British governments. At the end of these agreements, Winston Churchill (who succeeded Chamberlain) declared: "Between dishonour and war, you have chosen dishonour; and you will have war".
