Tray presented to Captain David Charles Medley in recognition of his service as Secretary of the London Mendicity Society. Founded in 1818 to put an end to begging in London, the Society for the Suppression of Mendicity was intended to offer charity in London's underprivileged districts. After falling into disuse for a time, it made a triumphant reappearance in The Times on 19 July 1919 as the London Mendicity Society, with the King as its patron. An article in The Times on 29 June 1959 invited members to dissolve the Society.
