DESLYONS, Jean. - Discours ecclésiastiques contre le paganisme des roys de la fève et du roy-boit, pratiqués par les chrétiens charnels en la veille et au jour de l'Epiphanie de N. S. Jésus-Christ.- A Paris, chez Guillaume Desprez, 1664 In-12 de (32) ff, 64, 60 pp; green morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, long-grained red morocco title-piece, gilt lace framing the boards, gilt roulette inside and on the edges, speckled edges. (Binding late 18th century). Uncommon first edition by Jean Deslyons (Pontoise 1615 - Senlis 1700). "In the first of the two speeches that make it up, the author violently protests against the ceremonies of the Roys de la Fève and du Roy-boit; in the second, he studies the means of turning the festivities of this festival upside down and of doing away with the meals to which it gave rise, these meals being, according to him, nothing but veritable orgies, reminiscent of the saturnalia of the ancients" (Vicaire, Bibliographie gastronomique, 272). A pleasant copy in a decorative late 18th century binding; armorial stamp of the Noirefontaine family (on the title).
