Dedicated to his friend, the singer, composer and baritone Léon Ponzio, our watercolour belongs to Gustav Mossa's most productive period, at the turn of the century alternating the symbolist subjects that made him a success with more expressionist and synthetic works on paper that fuelled his output as a press illustrator. Combining Indian ink, watercolour and coloured pencil, he sometimes caricatured socialites and sometimes religious figures, while also taking an interest in current affairs and small trades. Our seamstresses, for example, are quickly sketched in a singularly modern framing that partially truncates the figure in profile on the right.
