From a dynasty of history painters, grandson of Auguste-Barthélémy Glaize and son of Léon Glaize, Raymond Glaize trained with the latter before joining Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio. He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1905 and enjoyed his first successes. Our large canvas is one of the few surviving examples of an artist who died too soon, cut down by the Great War in September 1914. Here, the painter depicts two undines taking advantage of the night to emerge from their stream among the reeds, while the moon illuminates a park animated only by the recognisable silhouette of the Narcissus of Pompeii, an antique model widely distributed in the studios.
