The annotation "F. Champenois" on the back of this mysterious canvas depicting a fairy spinning on a branch inevitably refers to the famous printer Ferdinand Amand Champenois (1842-1915), who ran and developed one of the most important printing companies of his time, distributing advertisements for the most famous brands. He had close ties with Alphonse Mucha, whose designs he published from 1895 onwards, and was president of the Chambre Patronale des lithographes between 1886 and 1892. Awarded the Légion d'Honneur, he won numerous prizes at the Universal Exhibitions, including a bronze medal in Paris in 1867 and in Vienna in 1873, a gold medal in Paris in 1878, a diploma of honour in Antwerp in 1885 and a silver medal in Brussels in 1897.
