Andrea di Bartolo, probably born between 1360 and 1370, was a painter of the Sienese school of the late Trecento and early Quattrocento. The son of Bartolo di Fredi, he began working on commissions received by his father. Around 1405, he produced two panels for the chapels of San Giacomo and San Crescenzio in Siena Cathedral, as well as cartoons for the stained-glass windows in the sacristy. His works reflect the influence of his father, enriched by the inspiration of Spinello Aretino. His style is also largely influenced by the great masters of the Trecento, such as Simone Martini and Duccio di Buoninsegna.
Our painting is signed, which is quite rare in his output. Other known signed works include the altarpiece at San Domenico in Siena, signed and dated 1397, The Madonna with the Belt (Richmond, Museum of Fine Arts, see opus quoted above, vol. 2, reproduced on pl. 423), a Madonna of Humility in the Wildenstein Collection in New York and the four lateral saints in a polyptych in the Basilica dell'Osservanza near Siena.
