STENDHAL (Henri BEYLE dit) : La Chartreuse de Parme. By the author of Rouge et Noir. Paris, Ambroise Dupont, 1839. 2 volumes. 12 by 20,5 cm. (4)-402 ; (4)-445 pages. Midnight blue half-binding, smooth spine decorated with romantic designs, with small white vellum corners. Very good condition of the binding (spine very slightly faded). Very high quality pastiche binding, having respected the copy as best as possible. A few very light freckles on the first 3 leaves, a small marginal stain on one page. Discreet stamp of a former owner on the title pages, and in one margin of each volume. The work has been artfully restored, but the following should be noted: Volume 1: page 35: a small hole without missing; pages 47, 65, 103, 137, 169, 231, 289, 323, 335, 387: small tear restored with art (without paper or filmoplast). Volume 2: pages 5, 147,149, 165, 195, 243: small tear restored with art (no paper or filmoplast). Pages 49, 333, 335, 337, 401: small paper loss in margin, restored. Page 361-362: small loss at corner of page, restored with loss of pagination figures. A long list of discreet defects. Copy free of all freckling, and with no mention of edition. Without the catalogue leaf, which is sometimes found. Very rare first edition of one of STENDHAL's two most famous novels. Despite the numerous paper defects, the copy remains very enviable.
