[manuscript] 18th century manuscript antiphonary.
Large antiphonary measuring 27 by 40 cm. (1)-leaves 1 to 23-(24)-leaves 24 to 81. A total of 167 pages. Complete. Modern white half vellum, titled on the spine. Good condition of the binding.
15 leaves with small restorations on the lower corner. Only one leaf with a more important restoration, and the loss of some characters. This defect is the result of a long use of this antiphonary, worn by the turning of the pages...Copy trimmed a little short at the top of the pages, with loss of some leaf numbers, without more. Otherwise very good condition inside.
Impressive polychrome manuscript, the pages are framed by a yellow band delimited by a red fillet, capitals in blue and red, to indicate the responsories.
Very fine manuscript frontispiece in colour, showing King David (recognisable by his lyre) on his knees receiving the divine word from the Archangel Saint Michael, holding the flaming sword. A title at the bottom: David perseguido.
The spine of the frontispiece is also decorated with a coloured drawing.
The 4 pages between folio 23 and 24 are on a different paper, and are not decorated. This is the addition of the Alma redemptoris Mater, the oldest Antiphon to the Virgin.
This manuscript probably dates from the first half of the 18th century. Judging by its style of ornamentation, it is probably of Spanish origin.
