8 by 14,5 cm. VIII-195 ; (2)-198 ; (4)-195 ; (4)-216 pages. Brown half-basane, nicely decorated smooth spine, with green paper corners. Few leaves very slightly darkened, otherwise a very fine copy.
Anonymous first editions for both parts (Entretiens and Suite des entretiens) of this important text. The Entretiens was published less than a year later with the author's name.
Louis-Sébastien Mercier (1740-1814) was a playwright, novelist and journalist. In 12 "interviews", he recounts his encounters and discussions during his wanderings around the Palais-Royal. The 13th chapter is a review of the work. The Suite includes 13 new interviews.
It is not only an important account of what went on in this fashionable place, where everyone who mattered had to pass through once a day, but also a general satire on the mores of the time, and a philosophical reflection...
