Vegetius (Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus) was a Roman writer of the end of the fourth and the first half of the fifth century A.D., author of a work on the Roman army and military tactics, entitled De re militari, whose success continued throughout the Middle Ages and the modern era.
Frontinus, in Latin Sextus Iulius Frontinus, born around 35/40 and probably died in 103, was a triple consul, suffect and military writer who wrote a famous book on stratagems.
Élien, nicknamed Élien the Tactician (Aelianus Tacticus) or Élien the Elder1, was a Greek writer who lived at the end of the first century and the beginning of the second, author of a treatise on the military arts entitled Theory of Tactics.
Modestus (or Pseudo-Modestus) probably worked between the ninth and twelfth centuries. His work is known from more than 30 manuscripts and was printed six times before 1500. It is one of the most famous military treatises of the 16th and 17th centuries.
