[Dauphiné] DEVAUX (Abbé A.). The dialects of the Dauphiné. Tome I. Dictionnaire des patois des Terres Froides avec des mots d'autres parlers dauphinois (...). Volume II. Atlas linguistique des Terres Froides. Lyon, Bibliothèque de la Faculté catholique des lettres, 1935. 2 volumes in an in-8 full posterior green Jansenist morocco, spine with 5 nerves decorated with two gilded titles, cover and spine preserved. XC, 335 pp., 415 pp.
Rare first edition, complete in two parts:
Tome I. Dictionnaire des patois des Terres Froides avec des mots d'autres parlers dauphinois; posthumous work published by Antonin Duraffour and Abbé P. Gardette. Preceded by a biography of the author by Lavallée and a geographical and historical introduction by Canon A. Dussert [it contains 6707 numbered articles. This does not mean exactly as many words, as several numbers sometimes represent the same term].
Tome II. Atlas linguistique des Terres Froides. Posthumous work published by Antonin Duraffour and Abbé P. Gardette [Neither Devaux nor Ronjat had thought of an Atlas of the Cold Lands. But the former had noted, on 800 large index cards, the phonetic and lexical variants of a special questionnaire devoted to common terms found everywhere. This was the starting point for the Atlas project. By discarding the cards that offered few variants or were incomplete, it was possible to reduce it to 394 lithographed maps, which fit into the format of volume l, since they only concern the Cold Lands, with their 67 localities].
A very fine copy in a quality modern binding.
