REYNOLDS Joshua (School of) Plympton 1723 - London 1792 Portrait of Madame Elisabeth Hartley as a nymph with her child as a young Bacchus on a landscape background. Oil on canvas (Repainting) H. 82 - W. 71.3 cm Wood and gilded stucco frame with shells, scrolls and flowers. Presumed provenance: On the reverse of the frame an old typed label in English, probably from a sale, with numbers and a date C. 10 / 12 / 43. Related to the composition by Joshua Reynolds (1773) of similar dimensions (canvas 88.9 x 68.6 cm) depicting the famous actress Elisabeth Hartley (née White; 1750 - 1824) in the National Gallery in London. In his catalogue of the painter's work David Mannings lists a number of early copies (Cf. Sir Joshua Reynolds. A Complete catalogue of his paintings.
